Quick Review

The 2013 Compass remains a respectable family SUV in the compact SUV segment.

Considering the popular new design, the Jeep Compass is no longer the bug-eyed car it once was. This is now a genuinely attractive SUV. It may still look a little awkward from certain angles, but this is light-years ahead of the 2010 model and Jeep consider it their most premium looking model yet. On the inside though, it’s a different story.

One area the Compass can definitely improve is the interior quality. Compared to much higher-priced Jeep models like the Grand Cherokee, the difference is surprisingly slight. But compared to some similar offering from other brands, the Jeep Compass needs to catch up. Competitors include Land Rover Defender and Ford Escape.

On the roads though, all models feel roughly the same. The 2013 Jeep Compass might not be truly rapid, but the 2.4 litre engine has enough kick to overtake confidentially. Take note though, the steering varies at speed; parking and other round-the-town man oeuvres feel reassuringly tight, but on the open road the Compass’ handling can feel a little unresponsive. It’s still offers decent drivability, but there’s something not quite there at high speeds.

As a family car, the Compass is a great choice. There’s plenty of room on the inside and a massive 51 litre boot for storage. This is a solid offering for long family journeys on a respectable budget.
