Quick Review

The 2012 edition of the Land Rover LR4 has a few minor changes from 2011. These include enhancements to the standard audio system; and internal memory storage for the optional hard-drive based navigation.

The Land Rover LR4 compares reasonably well with other cars in the luxury midsize SUV segment, but it's not really a front runner. It's a more interesting drive than the slightly cheaper but more anonymous-looking Lexus RX 350. The BMW X5 is more conservative-looking, has a slightly higher price tag and can't match the LR4's capabilities on rougher terrain, but the LR4 lacks the X5's intuitive steering and responsive handling. The Land Rover LR4 is also outperformed by many competitors when it comes to fuel efficiency. It does boast some lavish interior styling and all the technological goodies you'd expect from a car in this segment. Off-road it outperforms most competitors. Its Terrain Response System offers Highway, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl settings, while Descent Control tackles steep slopes with gusto.

The Land Rover LR4 will appeal to lovers of luxury who don't want to break the bank, and who need a reliable off-road vehicle that can tackle some really nasty terrain. It's great if you have family to consider, with plenty of useful space and generously sized rear seating.

Suspension articulation plus cutting-edge traction control technology lets the LR4 stay stable even over obstacle-strewn off-road trails. On the road, the ride is surprisingly quiet and comfortable for such as large, powerful vehicle.
