Quick Review

For 2012, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class gets two new paint colors. On the GL450, LED daytime running lights are now standard.

The 2012 GL-Class is definitely one of the strongest contenders, if not the strongest, in the luxury large SUV segment. It offers genuine Mercedes-level luxury throughout its cavernous interior, as well as serious SUV performance. For a large SUV, the fuel efficiency is good. The only area where the GL-Class doesn't quite shine is off-road. It can certainly handle a little rugged terrain, but it doesn't have the serious rough-and-tumble capabilities of some of its rivals. Then again, most luxury shoppers won't be looking for a gritty canyon-crawler. If you do need a bit more of an off-road brute, you could look at the Infiniti QX56. The QX56 can't hold a candle to the Mercedes' lush exterior looks, but it does have a spacious, comfortable cabin and plenty of off-road chops. Those who need to cope with more serious terrain might want to investigate Land Rover's Range Rover Sport, which combines the Land Rover's famous brawn with the plushness of the Range Rover line. The Mercedes tops them both for reliability though.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a family SUV for the luxury shopper who wants plenty of space and the reassurance of some off-road capabilities. On the road, the GL-Class is amazingly polite for its size. It has plenty of power under the hood and handles brilliantly. The ride is as comfortable as you'd expect but still sporty.
