The car you see is the Soueast DX3, a Chinese SUV that looks good and costs 53,500 Dirhams, and today I am going to answer if it is worth your hard-earned money. Let’s get started!

Drive

Sueast DX3

Now before I tell you more about the car and what it feels like to drive, I’m going to give you a short introduction about the brand because chances are you’ve never heard of Soueast before. As I mentioned earlier, Soueast is a Chinese automotive manufacturer and it is a joint venture between 3 companies: Fujian Motor, Taiwan China Motor, and Mitsubishi Motors and although they aren’t very well-known internationally, domestically in China they produce over 180,000 cars per year.

This DX3 is just one of many cars they produce and it is powered by a Mitsubishi-sourced all-aluminum MIVEC 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Power outputs stand at 154 horsepower and 225 Nm of torque and all of that power is pushed through a CVT gearbox that is manufactured by Belgian company Punch Powertrain. There is a Sport Mode as well, but don’t expect much from it as it only seems to change the color of the instrument cluster from a pleasant white to a blazing red.

Soueast DX3

In terms of driving aids, the DX3 has cruise control, a speed limiter, hill descent control, and auto hold – a feature that lets you take your foot off the brake without the fear of rolling forward or backward in gear. There are also turning lights that illuminate in which direction you turn your steering wheel and although our fuel economy figure at 9.8L/100km is not as good as the claimed average, it’s still pretty impressive.

Having said that, the DX3 is a victim of something we’ve seen with many other manufactures as well. The combination of a small turbo engine and a CVT gearbox means that when you do approach something like a stop sign or a set of traffic lights and you are ready to push off, the lag from the turbo spooling and CVT engaging is just so much that at times it can catch you off-guard.

Interior

Soueast DX3 Back Seats

Inside, the designers have carried over the concept of a dual-tone color scheme with the seats and door panels finished in a combination of grey and black faux leather. The overall design is quite minimal, which I personally am a fan of, and the use of chrome around the A/C vents and faux carbon fiber around other bits and pieces does make it look more expensive than it really is.

In the back, there really is a lot of space even though the seats do not slide forwards or backward, or recline. There are two cup holders and USB ports that can come in handy when you want to charge things up like your mobile phone, but I really do wish there were A/C vents in the back too.

Features

Soueast DX3

When it comes to the features, the DX3 comes with a lot of them. So many in fact, that you are bound to stop and ask yourself, all of this in just 53,500 Dirhams? There is a remote engine starter. There are automatic headlights. There is a full-length panoramic roof. There are 360-degree cameras. There is an ambient lighting system. There is Bluetooth phone connectivity. There is a 9-inch touch infotainment screen. And there is a Push Button Starter.

But there is a catch. While it all looks and sounds pretty impressive at first, there’s definitely room for improvement. The android infotainment screen looks and feels like an aftermarket fitment (even though it isn’t) and the 360-degree cameras, well, they work but they aren’t of the highest resolution.

Exterior

Where I will give the team a lot of credit is on the design front. The DX3 is a very good-looking car and the dual-tone color scheme with the blacked-out roof and side mirrors is a great touch. In the front, it’s got LED daytime running lights with halogen headlamps, while on the sides it has got a set of 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps, but by far my favorite part about the design is the floating roof.

Verdict

Soueast DX3

Keeping in mind that the Soueast DX3 is priced at 53,500 Dirhams including VAT and that it comes with a 5-year/150,000km warranty, you are probably waiting for me to answer if it is worth your hard-earned money. On the one hand, yes it is because if you were to walk into a Japanese automaker’s showroom with just 53,000 Dirhams in your pocket, you’d likely walk out with nothing more than an extremely basic hatchback.

Having said that, there are crossovers that fall into the DX3’s price range, namely the Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport, and I know those don’t offer as many features but they are from far more established brands. So, if you had a budget of 53,000 Dirhams, which one would you buy?
