Mercedes-Benz is gradually entering with models based upon its recently adopted design language. Not long ago, the 4 door fastback, CLS debuted and soon to follow the bandwagon was the A-Class hatchback with scalding details. The compact hatchback sitting at the low end of the spectrum in its lineage was adored by many. Its interior design was gorgeous to look at and it turned out to be surprisingly roomy. However, for the most ravenous of enthusiasts, there was still some work to do. That was, to make the car worthy of the elite AMG badge. For that sole reason, we will be getting a solidly powerful AMG A45 with some serious changes made under the skin and on it.

Here’s the most affordable AMG performance focused car from Mercedes-Benz for you to tame it.

EXTERIOR

Borrowing its design from the new gen A-Class, it looks tantalizing and striking from every corner and conspicuously different from its progenitor. The most noticeable changes upfront include the Panamericana angular grille, new set of flashy air intakes, the CLS-class inspired headlights and a contoured bonnet with creases.

The compactness feels the most evident from the side with small doors and glass area. However, in this more potent AMG guise, one is likely to find blackened wing mirrors and door frames and truculent wheel spokes embellished in matte-black and contrasting colored brake calipers.

At the rear, the character of the standard A-Class remains evident barring a huge spoiler on the roof and a huge diffuser with plenty of exhausts. On a scale, the car measures 4.359m, 1.780m and 1.433 m in length, width and height, respectively. The car shows a wheelbase of 2.699 m.

As it has been the recent norm with Mercedes-Benz, the A45 AMG also features a double digital screen layout. The former serves as the instrument cluster while the latter (MBUX) provides with the functionality. You will also find a crisp flat-bottomed steering wheel with aluminum finishing on the buttons and AMG logo embossed on it. The rotary AC vents finished in matte-black are another highlight about the car’s interior. Despite being a performance oriented hatch, there are many storage spaces inside the car. Just like the A-Class, the touchpad too has been revised.

One is going to be well-acquainted with tons of leather on the dash, seats and door pads all of which, give it a sumptuous feel. What discriminates it from the standard model, are aluminium pedals, sporty alcantara seats and contrasting color stitching on the dash, steering and seats.

Noteworthy features include automatic climate control, Navigation, rear AC vents, ambient lighting, Bluetooth telephony and drive modes such as Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

AMG A45 performance

Digressing to the more important bit, the A 45 AMG uses the most powerful 2 liter turbo petrol engine that debuted on the AMG CLA 45 S and churns out a mind bending 415 hp and 500 Nm of torque making it legitimately, the fastest hatchback on the road. Driving such power through all four wheels is a new 8 speed automatic gearbox replacing the 7 speed G-Tronic Plus. The aftermath of such unparalleled power is a naught to 100 Km/h time of just 3.9 seconds making it blisteringly rapid. The top speed is electronically controlled to 250 Km/h. Such figures should ensure an unruffled experience on the road. To ease up things, Mercedes-Benz will most likely provide the car with 19” wheels, extra body stiffening and bigger front brakes making the car more nimble around the bends.

VERDICT

AMG A45 Verdict

The new AMG A45 arguably sets the benchmark in its segment with the most powerful 2.0 Turbo engine every petrolhead would be egging to sample. It carries the extremely concomitant dash layout of its bigger siblings which accentuate its opulence. Not to forget, it’s a 5 door hatch making it a practical car for the routine locomotion. While it might tick the desirability and wow factor, we expect it to be expensive post its launch in the UAE and it remains to be seen if it is a value for money proposition over the much acclaimed Audi RS3 Sportback and the BMW M2, both of which have been gaining hearts, quickly.
