Road Test Review: 2015 Audi Q7

Audi currently pioneers the sporty premium car market segment. We recently got our hands on the grandest SUV of all Audis, the beefy Q7. Personally I have been a skeptic of German made SUVs, I always think that they should stick to what they are good at which is making road cars engineered to perfection, and leave the making of big rigs to the Americans and Japanese. Therefore I was curious to review the Audi Q7 just to find out what it had up its sleeve:

Style

The test car I received came in an absolutely stunning Ipanema Brown that leaned more towards a dark orange during the day and an angry majestic brown during the night. Up front, the Audi Q7 flaunted the larger than life signature Audi grille and daytime running lights nestled neatly within the bumper above the lower grilles. Moving around to the side of the Q7, we see a car that seems longer than it actually is, a roof line that slants down in the most subtle way possible, and ending at a spoiler that is integrated into the automatic opening and closing tailgate. A badge that read “supercharged” was slapped on the front fenders of the Q7, but we’ll get to that later. Round back, you get dual oval exhaust tips that are beautifully integrated within the rear bumper and between them sits a silver diffuser-like-skidplate which all together give the Q7 and flamboyant behind.

Interior

The Q7 is huge, but it is on the inside where you appreciate the grandeur of this machine. Leg room is vast for both front passengers and rear seat passengers which does not happen very often. A 3rd row is also present in the Q7, but you either need to be a child no older than 11 to sit there or have no legs. The large comfortable seats came in a stunning Ash brown color which only compliments the color of the car. The Q7 we had was fitted with a ridiculously awesome sounding BOSE surround sound system which I will gamble and call one of the best speaker systems I have heard on a car. Unfortunately that is where the positives end in terms of interior. The center stack on the Q7 is actually well put together, except for the awkwardly sized screen, and the key hole in the dashboard that is very annoying to look at because the car has keyless start and stop. While on that subject, the Q7 has an engine start button, and a completely different button to switch off the car, go figure. An out of place cup holder and outdated dot-matrix climate control display, made the Q7 a letdown in those departments.

Power and Handling

The Q7’s heart is made up of a supercharged 3.0 liter V6 that pushes 333 Horsepower through and 8-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox to all 4 wheels generating 440 Nm across the rev range. This allows the Q7 to tackle a 0-100 test in a tested 7.6 seconds in the Dubai heat. I could easily say that the Q7 has a split personality. On one hand, the Q7 can be a very calm and comfortable car that makes little engine noise coupled with soft comfortable suspension, which is perfect for those lazy calm cruising days. But then when you hit the gear lever into sport mode, and set the air suspension to dynamic, the car lowers itself ever so smoothly. The Q7 has now transformed into a tarmac eating beast that can take on corners without breaking a sweat thanks to the lowered and stiff suspension and the excellent Quattro all-wheel-drive system by Audi. This is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Practicality

Being an SUV, the Q7 has a huge boot when the 3rd row is folded flat, for more room you can fold down the 2nd row. Being a family man, the Q7 was excellent for taking the kids around to their respective summer camps, and according to them it was very comfortable. One thing that I noticed was the lack of a side step or running board, which makes getting in and out of the Q7 a mission for the young ones. The air suspension previously mentioned comes in very handy as it has 6 different ride height settings. First is the “lift” setting which raises the car to an extreme height but can only be active as long as the car is traveling below 60KMpH, this is used for getting over some tricky obstacles that may come in your path. The second setting is the “off-road” height followed by “Comfort” mode then “auto” setting and the “Dynamic” setting which we spoke of earlier. The final setting can only be activated from the boot of the car, there is a small lowering button, this setting brings the car down with only inches between it and the ground, and this is good for loading and unloading in the car.

Verdict

With all the nifty gadgetry of the Q7 and the little annoying things here and there, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by the Q7. It has changed my mind about German made SUVs as this car combines the best of both worlds into one majestic package. The price tag for this package is a pocket burning 318,000 AED. This is a little over priced when you compare it to the competition.
