Being a rather large person (186 CM to be exact) I am a big fan of big cars such as pick ups and full sized SUVs. So when I got the call about test driving a Fiat 500 by GUCCI I was a little bit hesitant, for the fact that it is a tiny car and also the fact that it is “GUCCI” but I thought why not, let’s take a look at how that went.

Style

The Fiat 500 is a car with one of the simplest exterior styling I have ever seen. It is designed for exactly what is needed. There is a hood, a cabin, and the hatchback end. No special lines and nothing too aerodynamic about it. This was fiat’s idea of how the 500 should look like, then they gave it to GUCCI and they threw up all over it. All the noticeable exterior features are something done by GUCCI. For starters, there is the GUCCI stripe that is running through the middle of the car on a horizontal manner, keep in mind this is a sticker, not paint which makes it easier to peel and fade and also makes it look cheaper. Then we have the GUCCI badges on either doors and on the trunk. Not to forget the GUCCI logo hubcaps on wheels that were also designed by GUCCI. The light arraignment are pretty simple on the fiat 500 where you have the larger xenon lights and the smaller first stage light right below that, and not to forget the tiny fog lights that are integrated within the bumper.

Head Turner

Being a different car, it attracted a lot of attention from many people. Many times I parked the car in an open space and counted how many people stopped to look at it and how many of those took a photo of it. In a span of 2 hours, 30 people stopped to look at the car, 23 of them took a photo of it, and 22 of the ones who took photos were girls. Probably to post on Instagram with the caption #CuteCar.

This car is meant for a certain kind of owner, which does not include a 186CM tall big guy with a beard. This was clear to see in the confusion that was written all over the faces of people who stopped next to me at red lights.

Interior

Inside the Gucci-mobile the story of the GUCCI invasion continues. The seats are genuine leather that have the GUCCI logo printed into them in a tile format, this goes for both the front and the back seats, and just in case you did not notice the GUCCI logo in the seats, they have added a GUCCI stripe that goes right through the middle of every seat in the car. To make sure that you know this is a GUCCI edition car, the seatbelts are made of GUCCI stripes. The “special” factor of the interior of the car practically stops there. The dashboard is black and white hard plastic which really cheapens the interior of the car.

Comfort

I don’t think I can call the Fiat 500 a sub-compact, because it is even smaller than a Toyota Yaris, or a Mazda 2. Therefore interior space and comfort can be a bit of a problem for a man of my size. Leg room is not very vast in the front, and it is nonexistent in the back if you are sitting behind a tall person. The seat does not go as low as it should so you always have that feeling of sitting too high, but nevertheless, headroom was still pretty decent.

The car’s size can be awesome at times. For example I was in traffic and the car was so small that it was extremely easy to weave through traffic without fearing hitting anyone. Also the car is so small, that blind spots are almost nonexistent. Maneuvering this car around in tight areas is a breeze! Parking it is even easier. Let us take the situation where you want to Parallel Park, 80 percent of the spaces between the cars are more than enough to park the Fiat 500 Gucci which is very convenient.

Driving on the highway can be a bit annoying for 2 main reasons. Wind noise creeps in when you cross the 80 KMPH mark and is very loud when you go above 130 KMPH. The other problem is that it does not have cruise control which is somewhat of an inconvenience.

Drive Performance

This tiny car is powered by a 1.4 liter inline-4 engine that is connected to a dual-logic gearbox. This setup provides the Gucci-mobile with 100 horsepower at 6000 RPM and 131 Nm of torque at 4300 RPM. The Fiat 500’s gearbox is the first of its kind that I have driven; this gearbox is practically a manual gearbox where the clutch is automatically pneumatically operated. The fiat 500 is extremely underpowered at anything lower than 5000 RPM.  The Gucci-mobile is able to go from 0-100 in a tested 12.3 seconds.

The fiat 500 is a very nimble car; it can bob and weave like it’s nobody’s business. Its size added to its low center of gravity helps limit body roll and increases chassis responsiveness. Just like any other front wheel drive car, understeer is present but it is surprisingly less that most cars of the same setup.

Fuel Efficiency

The fiat 500 has a 35L fuel tank which is tiny when compared to other cars. But nevertheless, I am still able to get a good 500KM out of a full tank while driving the 500 very roughly. It was a very fuel efficient car, where on highway speeds I got an average fuel consumption of 5.8 L/100KM. in city driving I got an average consumption of 8.3 L/100KM keep in mind that I floored it most of the time.

Verdict

Driving the Fiat 500 by GUCCI around for a while was certainly an interesting experience.  It was a very fun car to drive around, but it lacked power, a lot of it, especially in low RPMs. I personally believe that the Fiat 500 by GUCCI is suitable for fashionistsas that want to have a designer car that they can show off from time to time but they don’t want to use all the time. The fiat 500 by GUCCI is more of a fashion statement rather than a car that you would drive every day. Think of the Gucci-mobile like this ladies; it is like that special pair of shoes that you have in your closet that you almost never wear, but you still want to own because you are sure an event will come where you will need them, but that event never comes.
