So, we got ourselves a Volkswagen Jetta – a car which is not that popular in this region due to the monopoly of the Japanese automobiles. The main reason being the resale value. In this segment, not many look for the ride quality or comfort. Instead they look at the final price, maintenance and resale value. Hence, not many consider the German brands for affordability. So, it was a nice test to see whether the Jetta fits the bill or not.

Key Features:
Engine 2.5 liter
Transmission 6-speed auto
Power 170 BHP
Top Speed 200 km/h
Starting Price AED 72000

Exterior

The Jetta was introduced about 5 years ago. And since then the styling hasn’t much changed. The 2016 model is basically a mild facelift introduced last year. The only difference being that the plain look of the previous gen has been replaced with more horizontal lines giving it a more aesthetic appeal. However, I feel it is time the Jetta changes looks for the better. The alloys feel right in this car. Also, the Bi-Xenon lamps with DRLs give a premium look.

Interior & Safety

Since the test car was the SEL trim, it had the best to offer from VW in this segment. There is the soft-touch leather steering wheel in addition to the leather seating. The decorative aluminum inserts give the car a premium feel – something which is not felt in the competitors. Other than that, you have the regular equipment like BT, AUX, Touchscreen, Rear Camera, Climate Control, 8 Speakers etc. The interior spacing is nice for the front passenger but rear leg room seems a bit cramped. The trunk is 510 liters so there is enough space for your luggage. The Jetta SEL comes standard with safety features like 6 airbags, Park assist, fog lamps, ESP, hill assist

Drive

The Jetta is powered by 2.5L engine producing 170 BHP. This is enough to propel the car from 0-100 in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h. The combined fuel consumption is 7.1 l/km. The engine somehow feels a bit sluggish and outdated by today’s standards as everyone else is going for the turbocharged solutions. I would suggest using the Golf’s 210 BHP engine in the Jetta. Other than that, the ride is comfortable – much better than the competitors. The steering is responsive and not sloppy. Overall, the drive is smooth. If they add a bigger engine, it would be fun as well.

Verdict

The Volkswagen Jetta is a perfect package for an affordable mode of transportation. The dealers here just need to market that fact.
