Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of those automotive success stories which inspire other automakers to strive for something similar. It’s the kind of car that doesn’t really need any formal introduction, at least to the millions that already own one, and to the countless others who see at least a few dozen of these every day. With five generations of the CR-V, Honda has been able to keep hold of a sizeable and profitable slice of the Compact Crossover SUV pie in almost every market they operate in. Just like most of the crossovers in its segment, the Honda CR-V shares its underpinnings with the Civic sedan, and was originally built as a strict five-seater (though some places get a three-row variant, too).

However, one of the more interesting aspects of this Honda crossover is its name - CR-V. So, does it actually mean anything or is it just a random collection of alphabets? Well, as a matter of fact, CR-V stands for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle”, which, come to think of it, is quite accurate. In markets such as the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East, the Honda CR-V finds itself between the cheaper (and smaller) HR-V and the more expensive (and larger) Pilot. The CR-V’s primary rivals come in the form of the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Ford Escape, and Volkswagen’s Tiguan. In terms of its pricing, the GCC-spec 2019 Honda CR-V sold in the UAE retail for AED 92,900 for the entry-level LX trim with two-wheel drive (2WD) or front-wheel drive (FWD). Moving on, the mid-tier EX Plus with all-wheel drive (AWD) starts from AED 114,000, while the fully-loaded Touring version with AWD wears a sticker price of AED 126,000.

The exterior dimensions of the 2019 Honda CR-V read 4.586 meters in length, 1.855 meters in width, 1.678 meters in height and 2.660 meters between the wheels. Under the sculpted hood, all variants of the CR-V currently on sale in the UAE come with only one engine option - the tried & tested K24W 2.4-liter four-cylinder. This normally-aspirated i-VTEC motor employs modern technologies such as direct injection and dual overhead cams to deliver 184 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 244 newtons of maximum torque at 3,900 rpm. Irrespective of which trim you choose, the only transmission available is a CVT. At full throttle, the Honda CR-V can go from a standstill to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds (which isn’t saying much), before running out of steam at an indicated 200 km/h. While it may not be fast, the CR-V can return anywhere from 6.4 to 6.8 L/100 km, which far from shabby.

As for conveniences and on-board features, the 2019 Honda CR-V is quite well equipped. Even the base LX variant comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs & tail lamps, tailgate-mounted spoiler, keyless entry, automatic air-conditioning with rear vents, cruise control, 4-speaker sound system with USB & Bluetooth connectivity, steering-mounted audio controls, 5-inch multimedia head unit, electronic parking brake with auto hold feature and a multi-angle rearview camera. The LX’s standard safety suite includes dual front airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) & Emergency Brake Booster (EBB), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Traction Control System (TCS) with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) and ISOFIX rear seat anchoring points.

On the other hand, the all bells & whistles Touring trim gets niceties like 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights with auto height adjustment, LED front fog lights, hands-free power tailgate, power-folding wing mirrors, push-button engine start (and remote engine start), power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, paddle shifters, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, active noise cancellation, upgraded 8-speaker sound system, front & rear USB charging ports, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and navigation. The Touring trim also adds four more airbags (for a total of six airbags), Honda LaneWatch system, and a driver attention monitor.
