Quick Review

The original Volkswagen Beetle, first produced in 1938, was one of the most popular cars ever made with more than 21 million models sold. The design was revived in 1998 but production ended in 2010. This means that, rather than being a simple annual update, the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is a brand new vehicle.

Wider and longer than the previous model, the 2013 Beetle has improved legroom, a bigger trunk and a driving position that provides a far better view of the road. The interior is modern and functional but nicely colour-coded with small touches that pay homage to the much-loved original car such as a drop-down glove box.

Larger than the Mini Cooper and Fiat 500 but not quite as practical as the Ford Focus or the Volkswagen Golf - one which it is partly based - the 2013 Beetle almost occupies a class of its own. However, with a design that now looks even closer to the original than the previous generation, the 2012 Beetle will particularly appeal to those who want to make fashion statement as they go from A to B.

The 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine comes equipped with a 5 speed manual transmission and produced 102 horsepower and 148 Nm. On the other hand, the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine comes equipped with a 6 speed automatic transmission and produces 105 horsepower and 200 Nm.

Although its functionality has been greatly improved, this remains above all a fun car to drive. With both convertible and high-performance versions on their way later in the year, the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle could be on track to win the hearts of a whole new generation.
