Quick Review

The 2013 Volkswagen Phaeton is the latest model in the decade-old luxury range. The lavish but understated sibling of the ubiquitous Golf has met with considerable success in emerging markets, particularly China.

In 2013, the Phaeton received a facelift, adding more angular styling to the large, imposing frame – bringing it in line with the looks of other VW models. The new release does not differ to its predecessor significantly.

The interior of the Phaeton includes all the expected luxury components: leather, wood, chrome and aircraft-style seats. As well as a traditional five-seater cabin, a four-seat configuration can be selected as an option. Air conditioning – with solar powered fans on some models – and rear camera and parking sensors are just some of the many features available for comfort and ease of driving.

In terms of the engine, the 4.2-litre V8 provides 335 hp at 6500 rpm – a formidable source of power, pushing the 2201kg from 0 to 100 kph in 7.0 seconds.

While many fans of the Volkswagen Phaeton appreciate its understated luxury, some feel it does not compare favorably to other cars in its price class, such as the Mercedes S-Class and Jaguar XJ. With more down-to-earth styling than its competitors, the Phaeton primarily makes its impact through size rather than looks.

With its high price tag and steep running costs, the Volkswagen Phaeton is not a choice for those concerned with economy, and is certainly not the best option for families. But if you're looking for a practical but luxurious vehicle, which provides a comfortable ride and good handling for its stately size, it will not disappoint.
