Quick Review

The 2012 Audi A3 is built on a completely new platform and is more efficient than the previous model due to the engine stop – start which is now a standard feature for all models. Due to a combination of aluminum and steel, the new Audi A3 is on average about 80kg lighter than the previous model.

There are two engine variants available; a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder that produces 125 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque, while the 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine produces 160 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The 1.4 liter and 1.8 liter complete a 0-100 km/h run in 9.5 and 7.7 seconds respectively. While the 1.8 liter can be had in either a 6 or 7 speed manual variable transmission, the 1.4 liter is fitted with a 7 speed manual variable transmission as standard.

In terms of the interior, it is simple, uncluttered, luxurious and reasonably spacious. Cargo space has also been increased by about 15 liters when compared to the previous model. The slide up infotainment screen is easy to read and adds a touch of class to the interior. Although the front seats offer ample room, the rear seats can get uncomfortable for anybody who is over 6 feet in height.

From the exterior, Audi have not experimented too much on the looks and the result isn't a fresh new design that will turn heads. Though the rear-end does look good and bears some resemblance to the Audi A1, the front-end is a slight let down due to it's boring design.

If you are not sold on buying the new Audi A3 just yet, you might want to have a look at the Volvo V50 Estate and the Peugeot 5008.
