Quick Review

The 2012 blurs the line between a standard pickup and an SUV. While Chevrolet has made numerous changes to the Avalanche throughout its run, the differences between the 2011 and 2012 models are minimal.

What sets the Chevrolet Avalanche apart from other vehicles in its segment is sheer versatility. At first glance, the Avalanche resembles an SUV with a small bed -- but with a few adjustments, it transforms into a pickup truck. You can fold away the back seats and slide in the back window, reducing the size of the cabin to give you a lot more carrying space in the rear. The only similar vehicle is the Cadillac Escalade EXT, which the Avalanche beats hands-down on price.

The Avalanche is a great choice for the practical driver who needs a large family vehicle that can also convey heavy loads when needed. The price tag might be a little higher than for a standard pickup, but it returns far better value than buying (and finding parking space for) two separate vehicles -- something the savvy suburban shopper will certainly appreciate.

The 310-horsepower, 5.3-litre V-8 engine is attached to a powerful, torque-rich powertrain. There's an off-road package for those who need to tackle rough terrain. While practical, the Chevy Avalanche doesn't stint on the driving experience -- independent front suspension and a well-dampened ride will keep things comfortable up in the cabin (although the back seating is a little stiff).
