Quick Review

For 2012, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class gets a new, stronger engine. The transmission has also been updated for improved fuel economy. Both R-Class trims now come with LED daytime running lights as standard. Minor changes are made for the rearview camera and a handful of enhancements to the interior.

The R-Class is Mercedes-Benz', King in the family car segment. The R-Class has few rivals for reliability. The Audi Q7 is a contender but faces stiff competition from the roomy and sumptuous R-Class. Its handling is close to the Mercedes' car-like agility though. The more affordable Lincoln MKT's interior is closer in quality to the Mercedes', with similarly generous third row of seats. If you opt for the Eco boost MKT, it rivals some versions of the R-Class for fuel efficiency. The Lincoln's exterior isn't as classy however, even if it is less van-like. Another alternative is the BMW X5; though less impressive in some ways, the X5 is nimble and sporty, though less reliable than the R-Class.

The R-Class Mercedes-Benz is a family-friendly crossover SUV vehicle that will appeal to luxury shoppers who don't mind spending more for extra safety and reliability.

The R-Class offers a car-like drive, with surprisingly nimble handling for such a substantial vehicle. The ride is smooth and very comfortable. Both powertrains are satisfyingly strong and powerful.
