Quick Review

The Volkswagen Eos is an upscale midsized convertible car. A new higher-level trim, Executive, joins the existing Komfort and Lux trims.

The Eos is surprisingly practical, and its power-retractable hardtop means that it's also fun to drive. The hardtop protects well in bad weather, and has a sliding sunroof panel and power tilt for those days when you don't need to take the top all the way down. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine supplies plenty of gumption and the automatic transmission is smooth. In common with most convertibles, it's a bit snug in the back and there's little cargo space. Other minus points include reduced visibility with the top up and reduced rigidity with the top down. It's pricier than more affordable convertibles, but still cheaper than other upscale models.

A lower-budget alternative is the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible. It's less luxurious inside but does have more power. If you want a performance convertible and snugness and lack of cargo space don't deter you, the Infiniti G Convertible is an option. It's more expensive, but powerful and agile.

The Volkswagen Eos is a car for the upscale shopper who is prepared to pay for a little more for practicality and comfort.

The Eos is a very fun ride -- not the highest performance available, but lively and agile. It's comfortable for a convertible. The front-wheel drive helps it stay confident even in poor weather.
