Quick Review

The Toyota Avanza, an MPV that people have come to prefer over passenger cars due to it's roomy interior and striking good looks has undergone significant changes from the previous model. The 2012 model is 20 mm longer and 30 mm wider which translates into a more comfortable car for passengers. New door handles and better fuel consumption are just a few out of a long list of improvements.

The Avanza comes with either a 1.3 or 1.5 liter engine producing 91 and 103 horsepower respectively. On the other hand, torque is 117 Nm and 136 Nm for the 1.3 and 1.5 liter engines respectively. Due to disappointing torque figures, the Avanza feels like it lacks power and is unable to pull it's own weight over slopes. The lack of a sixth gear, makes the car very noisy when driven at higher speeds.

The interior of the car is spacious with enough room to carry passengers and their cargo without any issue. There are enough cup holders in place to hold drinks for all passengers. The only downside to the interior lies in the cheap interior finish which is a major let down.

In terms of the exterior, the location of the windscreen washers have been changed which now allows the Avanza to have an extremely smooth hood. New headlights and taillaights that wrap around the sides of the body have also enhanced the look of the Avanza.

If however, the Avanza is not your cup of tea, make sure you check out the Volvo V50 and Volkswagen Touran.
