Safety plays an important role in automobiles today. If one has to stress, safety has become more important than drive itself when it comes to satisfying regulations in a region. Hence, that is why we see so many cars with different systems just zooming pass by. For an average driver, who is not aware of technologies present in the car, it is difficult to understand how they work. I personally can vouch for the existence of such drivers today. Kids of today will understand as such tech comes natural to them but what about the previous generation. So, we thought about making people understand car safety of today.

This week, we present a rather very useful and somewhat frequently used safety feature in a car today – the Lane Assist. Well, different manufacturers’ call this system differently as per their own naming scheme but bottomline is – as apparent from the title – this system assists the car in the lane. So, what does it do exactly? In simple words, it keeps the car in the lane by alerting the driver whenever the car strays off into other lane. The NHTSA states that 5% of accidents occur while changing lanes. Hence, it is important to keep the lane markings in check in order to keep safe.

How does the system work exactly? Well, most cars have a camera behind the rear-view that scans for lane markings and then calculates the car position accordingly. This is done at speeds above 60 km/h mostly. When the system observes that the driver is entering another lane without pressing the correct indicator (left or right), it alerts the driver either with an audible sound or vibrations through the steering wheel or driver seat. The more advance version of this system is active lane assist which, in addition to alerts, takes control of the steering wheel and steers the car back into the lane with a slight jerk. This takes getting used to but it is useful especially when the driver is not concentrating. In GCC, this system is used by many drivers and helps change lanes on freeways in a safe manner.
