Every carmaker is looking to electrify their lineup in line with the 2030 combustion engine production ban. Porsche has been following suit with the all-electric Taycan launched in 2019, Macan going electric by the start of 2024, and 718 Cayman and Boxster, Cayenne and Panamera set to go fully electric in 2025, 2026, and 2028, respectively. By 2030, Porsche aims for EVs to account for 80 percent of its overall car sales.

However, the star of the Porsche lineup, the 911, will be the last car in the automaker's lineup to go electric. Karl Dums, head of the synthetic fuels department at Stuttgart, said: “Our strategy is to switch to electric mobility, but also to produce the 911 with a combustion engine for as long as possible.”

Porsche has been working towards developing e-fuels at its Highly Innovative Fuels pilot plant in Puntas Arenas, Chile. While e-fuels are an experimental product right now sold for around €10 a liter, the 911 will be able to retain the combustion engine by running on e-fuels.

So what's next for the 911? The iconic sports car is set to undergo a facelift in 2024 a Turbo S E-Hybrid version set to top the 911 range next year.

It is not until 2030 that the 911 will go electric with the all-electric version of the icon, the Type 998, set to be produced in collaboration with Rimac. However, reports suggest that the Type 998 will co-exist with synthetic fuel-powered 911 and a combustion engine version of the sports car will still be available.
